OUR STORY

Kokan Swad began its flavorful journey in 2008 as a humble takeaway counter in Bhandup, Mumbai. What started as a small family-run venture quickly grew into a brand known for serving authentic, home-style Kokani cuisine—all thanks to the passion and vision of its founder, Mr. Nitin Chalke.

A Chemistry graduate and a true foodie at heart, Nitin was deeply rooted in the culinary traditions of the Konkan region. Frequent visits to his native place helped him develop a keen taste for Kokani food. With several friends owning renowned eateries in the Konkan belt, Nitin spent quality time learning the intricacies of coastal flavors, kitchen operations, and food culture. This exposure, combined with his entrepreneurial spirit, led him to the idea of launching a Kokani food joint in Mumbai.

Encouraged by a close-knit circle of friends in Bhandup and supported by his family—especially the women of the house who helped create and standardize traditional in-house masalas—Nitin introduced authentic Kokani food to the people of Bhandup at affordable prices. The overwhelming response from the locals laid a strong foundation for what was to come.

In 2012, a new opportunity knocked on his door. Nitin’s sister, settled in Dubai, extended an offer to expand internationally through her husband’s business network. This led to the launch of Kokan Swad’s first international outlet in Bur Dubai. The restaurant was well-received and operated successfully until 2014, when Nitin decided to return to Mumbai. Although the Dubai outlet was handed over to another company, it still runs under the Kokan Swad name, continuing its legacy.

Back in India, Nitin set up his first dine-in outlet in Seawoods, Navi Mumbai (Sector 44), with a seating capacity of 40. The response was phenomenal, marking a turning point in his career. To this day, it remains one of Navi Mumbai’s most beloved restaurants.

Building on this success, Nitin expanded further:

At the heart of Kokan Swad’s quality and consistency is a 700 sq.ft Central Kitchen in Bhandup, which serves as the quality control and R&D hub. All in-house masalas, curries, and signature recipes are prepared and standardized here, ensuring that every outlet delivers the same great taste that customers have come to loves.
